A mixed medium piece (embroidery & printmaking) that pulls a few elements from the city itself. Can you tell what they are?
Inktober is a drawing challenge that was started in 2009 by Jake Parker. The challenge is to create an ink drawing every day for the month of October. For 2018, Brittany decided to combine ink drawings and embroidery. She had started learning embroidery since the beginning of that year, when she combined printmaking and embroidery to create Molt II. During the month, she also learned about Stitchtober, which is the same premise as Inktober, but with embroidery. More information on Inktober can be found here.
59 hours, 4 states, and 2 needle threaders later, Brittany’s second ever embroidery piece! This was for a two month long Two Escape Artists challenge. Linocut print and embroidery in an 8" hoop.
This is Brittany’s take on the city's older logo of the mermaid. (This mermaid is also on her other Norfolk embroidery hoop piece, but much smaller).
March 2017’s Two Escape Artists Challenge: Revisit an older piece of work. Brittany decided to re-work a print she made back in 2014, "Molt". The point was to show change; it's messy and challenging and different. So she decided to add another element to the print which was embroidery.
Two Escape Artists is a collective made up of Brittany Helms and Marissa Nielsen. Each month, the duo creates a piece of art work following a specific theme. To see all of the work they have created, click here.
